The term "Vertical Photography" refers to views taken from directly above the subject, looking straight down. SkySite is one of the few aerial photography companies in North Carolina that provides "true vertical photography" in both 35mm digital and 9”x9” film formats. Our camera is mounted to the floor of the aircraft and the images are captured through a camera port at a 90 degree angle to the ground.
Clients use our Vertical Aerial Photography for a variety of applications including:

SkySite has the most current imagery of many important areas of the Raleigh/Durham market, including the Research Triangle Park, NC. We are constantly updating our Raleigh/Durham aerial map. Areas of rapid change such as Brier Creek, and ongoing major road projects like the development of I-540, are photographed as often as needed to show significant change. Our base map extends from Zebulon to Pittsboro east to west, and Fuquay-Varina to Hillsborough south to north. We add custom graphics as needed to suit your specific requirements. Then we can produce large prints from this map, which we mount and dry-erase laminate. Clients use these at trade shows and in conference rooms. Since all of the work is done digitally, we are able to offer quick turnaround.

When shopping for vertical aerial photography, it is important to discuss with the photographer your end use so that the proper equipment and techniques are employed. It’s critical to distinguish the need for a true mapping mission, where certified cameras are used to capture scaled, geo-rectified images, from the need for a “near vertical photograph”, where the plane is banked at a steep angle and the photographer holds the camera out of the window. Each is called a “vertical” but they are different and the costs vary widely. We want you to receive the images that you need.
For mapping projects that require 9”x9” film format, photography will be captured on standard 9”x9" color aerial negatives with a Zeiss RMK II motion compensating camera, with 60% over lap per frame. Each frame will be scanned at 12 microns, which is 2200 ppi. Enlargements from these negatives will give you exceptional clarity for viewing buildings, land mass, and other points of interest. If needed, we are able to provide ortho-rectified imagery which ties to existing county GIS data, which greatly increases the informational value of the imagery.
These overhead views are used by attorneys, engineers, and people who work in real estate who need to see roof tops and road structures. These views are not meant to give a sense of height of structures as oblique views do. But rather, they allow you see in all directions around a site to view neighboring properties and to assess the shape and layout.
We fly as high or as low as we need to in order to capture the area that you need to see. These sample images show how flying at different altitudes results in very different perspectives.
